Sister Bonnie Steinlage has been a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor for more than 40 years, first working in Franciscan hospitals as a nurse and hospital chaplain, then attaining permission from her order to attend beauty school so she could provide professional hair care to the poor and homeless. After graduating, Sister Bonnie opened for business in the tiny bathroom of a shower facility for the homeless in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. For seven years, until 1995, she cut hair for 10,000 homeless people in that tiny bathroom. Then she opened her current salon in Over-the-Rhine, Ohio, where she continues to provide professional hair care to those in need. In 1997, Sister Bonnie’s one-woman ministry grew into Franciscan Haircuts from the Heart, an organization dedicated to enhancing the dignity and self-esteem of poor, homeless, or disabled men, women, and children by providing them with professional hair care. Through the organization’s Hair Care Voucher Program, needy clients throughout the city can receive vouchers from participating agencies and redeem them at a partner salon. Haircuts from the Heart reimburses the salon for their services at no cost to the client or social service agency. Paul Mitchell Schools have been a big fan and proud sponsor of Sister Bonnie and her work for several years, donating $5,000 in 2006 and $30,000 in 2007, the year that John Paul DeJoria gave her a new truck on behalf of John Paul Mitchell Systems. In 2008, Paul Mitchell Schools donated $30,000 to fund the organization’s entire budget for the coming year, bringing the total to date to $65,000.
